Space Cadet 56 is an upcoming science fiction novel shaped by both imaginative storytelling and personal experience. Written by James Tottle and David Inker, the book tells a mystery-driven story set in the near future, but it also reflects the resilience of its creators. Tottle drew on his experiences following a life-saving heart transplant and later mental health challenges, while Inker brought his own perspective after rebuilding his life following a spinal injury.
The novel follows Patient 56, a man discovered badly injured and suffering from total amnesia. Unable to speak, he is confined to the secure wing of St Luke’s Mind Care Facility, where he becomes known only by his patient number. His strange habit of drawing repetitive symbols on the wall, using a marker held between his toes, is initially dismissed by Dr Booker, the hospital director.
Nurse Hope sees something different in him. Her compassion and curiosity lead her to investigate the meaning of the symbols, and that decision uncovers a connection to a supposedly deceased astronaut from a failed Mars mission. The story then expands into a larger narrative involving lost memory, concealed identity and a conspiracy with consequences that reach beyond one patient’s case. The authors also weave humour, romance and emotional depth into the plot.
Beyond the novel itself, Space Cadet 56 includes an original soundtrack of more than 30 songs written and performed by Tottle, with one track linked to each chapter. Tottle has also produced original illustrations for the project, making it a combined literary, musical and visual work. With the book currently in its final stages of editing and production, the project presents a distinctive approach to science fiction built on collaboration, recovery and creative ambition.
