While simultaneously re-releasing his favourite Kartica song ‘Dare to Dream’, Mat Hook released his first solo single ‘Runaway Road which was recorded Live Acoustic at Son of the City Studio. Released on the 23rd August 2022, the single is a stripped back acoustic track which explores the emotional journey that has brought Mat to the more relaxed and positive place he thankfully finds himself in today, in general life and within his music.
With a natural twang to his vocal but enough strength to cut through above any noise, Mat Hooks sound is led and defined by his vocal ability and skills. While performing with an acoustic guitar, the chords act as a simplistic backdrop, allowing the vocals to shine and make a dominant presence throughout. With poetic and cleverly written lyrics, the choice to make the song less complicated allows the storytelling and craftsmanship shine through.
Mats’ personal life has been influential on his musical choices. Mat announces that “7-a-side football league & music saved me”. Founder of Football league Kickabout Sheffield, Mat Hook takes inspiration from his daily work and places that drive into his music. Sheffield’s football community has re-invigorated Mat Hooks life since beginning in 2014. Previous to joining Kickabout Sheffield, Mat Hook reached stardom as frontman of Sheffield band ‘Kartica’. Since leaving ‘Kartica, Mat has made his own path as an independent artist.
As the success of the league has grown, inspiration has grown and Mat is now coming out from the shadow of Kartica’s legacy and connecting with audiences again with his own art. Gaining viral videos online and recently being acknowledged by Daryl Hall, Mat hook is making strides as an independent artist.
